One of the most comfortable things to wear, especially in colder weather is sheepskin. There are sheepskins, coats, vests, and hats. It is used as the lining for boots and gloves. Sheepskin is very soft and wool is hypoallergenic (meaning it is very rare that anyone has an allergic reaction to it.) It is of course the hide of the animal with the pelt remaining intact, so you are literally wearing the sheep’s skin. Some animal rights activists equate this with fur but there is less likelihood of being attacked for wearing a sheepskin product than a fur product. We guess that is because sheep are also eaten, are not a cute as minks or chinchillas, and are slaughtered by the millions rather than the thousands. Wool is made from the sheep fur that is shaved off, but the sheep is not killed. With sheepskin the animal is sacrificed.

If you are comfortable with the moral choice, sheepskin is about as comfortable a material as you can find to wear, and even softer is lambskin. Sheepskin-lined coats last forever as the material is really strong. Besides clothing, sheep skin is used for many other items such as furniture coverings, blankets, rugs, saddle cloths (for horses), seat covers (for the car), and even golf club covers. Nothing is more warm and comforting than a sheepskin blanket, or lounging on a sheepskin rug in front of a fireplace on a cold winter’s night.

Sheepskin in its natural form is white color, but it is also dyed in a variety of colors and when dyed it can resemble beaver or seal skin fur. This is a product called “mouton fur” and it is very attractive and quite nice to wear. It does resemble fur much more than regular sheepskin so be aware that you may attract negative commentary from those with anti-fur sentiments.

One of our favorite winter coats is the sheepskin coat with a hood. They come in colors ranging from tan to black. The hood feature is the perfect way to keep your ears warm in the coldest of winter temperatures. When bundled up in sheepskin, you look like a Eskimo, that would be warm and comfortable even if in an igloo in sub-freezing weather. If you live in really cold climates, you can wear leather pants that are lined with sheepskin, a sheepskin vest, and a sheepskin coat and feel toasty warn even in the most severe weather. If you are a hunter there are sheepskin capes that are like open coats you throw over your shoulders to provide warmth, but also allow sweat to escape from all the walking you do that heats up your body.

There are also sheepskin sacks that are like a half of a sleeping bag, which you can use to give you warmth if you must sit for long periods to wait for the game to approach.

Another place where sheepskin linings are used is in the classic flight jacket. These flight jackets were made popular during WW II when fighter pilots were exposed to the elements while making their flights. They are made from dark brown leather, are lined with comfortable sheepskin, and have a sheepskin collar. They are still quite popular as men’s wear.
